Sweetness unfolding

For those who were at the Sunday service at church on 11/12, you must have noticed in the lobby the cookies, brownies, chocolate covered pretzel rods and "snowman soup" among other goodies.
Well, this is a blog post on how the sweetness unfolded before our eyes..

Rewinding back to Tuesday, Nov 7, we had our monthly meeting and the topic of this month was natural disaster.

With all the recent hurricanes that hit various parts of our country, we have sadly become accustomed to the human tragedies associated with the disasters. Unless we have directly been affected or know someone who have been, we are all in danger of leaving the memory behind and ceasing to care. Here at KidsServe, we want to teach our children to have a long lasting compassion, backed up by action.

We watched a video created by Samaritan's Purse (christian organization).  We all learned together the level of disaster caused by the three major hurricanes that our nation experienced just this year. One can never get used to the sight of the sheer amount of destruction. Houses filled with water, piles and piles of debris left on sidewalks, and desperate yet empty looks in the victims' eyes.. We had a good discussion about how we would feel if our area was hit by hurricane. What would we lose in the midst?

The video also focused on the organization's aid work. Tons of basic supplies are being shipped and many volunteers are working hard, providing support both physically and mentally to those who have lost so much. All is prayerfully provided so that the recipients would experience the love of our Lord and savior.

After the video, we shared with the kids about what God wants us to do when facing those in need.
The Bible says:
“Little Children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” 1 John 3:18

Although we may not be able to physically visit and help, we can use our resources to be a part of God's work... and what better ways do we have than to sell home baked goodies to show our students' sweet and caring hearts!

So the kids started to show their love in deed....

They decorated sugar cookies.

Packed "Santa Soup" with hot chocolate packets and marshmallows, etc.
Dipped pretzel rods in chocolate and decorated them with sprinkles.

Made signs for the bake sale.

The decorated goodies looked amazing!!

The students also managed to create Christmas ornaments for our December project. More info to come on that next month.

Renee and I were filled with a sense of pride and joy (and of relief) when we finally put out our bake sale table on Sunday.

The bake sale was a huge success. (Pastor Morris's encouragement from the pulpit was a great boost!) All but just a few items were sold out, resulting in a sales of a whooping $650+! All funds raised have been sent to Samaritan Purse allocated for their hurricane relief fund.

Job well done my friends!

A special shout out to the teenage and parent volunteers! Without your help, this bake sale would not have taken place. We also would like to thank the volunteers who baked and wrapped extra sweets. They looked amazing! Last but not least, we'd like to thank our church for graciously providing us space in the church as well as a lot of the behind the scene support. (Sue, the label making was a lot of fun!!)
 THANK YOU!

Till next month,
In awe of His grace,
R&R
